What is Text Transcription?

Transcription is word-for-word transposition of the spoken word into written form. It can be used for various occasions, such as training, lectures, interviews, podcasts, speeches, and teleconferences. The word “transcription” originates from Latin and is derived from the verb “transcribere,” which means “to make a written copy of” (from trans [across] + scribere [to write]).

Transcription requires a high level of oral comprehension, as the spoken word needs to be understood, even in a context that is often informal and full of interruptions. This process is usually time-consuming as well, because the transcription professional often needs to listen to the speaker several times to understand what they are actually saying.

Outsourcing transcription service saves the client a lot of time and significantly reduces the error rate, ensuring a professional service.  Plus, we use several text transcription tools and technologies that speed up the process and reduce inconsistency.

What is Subtitling?

Subtitling is the process of placing on-screen text in audiovisual media, whether transcribed in the same language as the original audio (also known as captioning), or translated into a different language. This is important to ensure that everyone who watches any particular video content fully understands what is being conveyed. In summary, subtitling consists of inserting texts that represent what is being said by the narrator or any participants who are speaking on or off camera.

Subtitling is part of audiovisual translation and must be carried out by specialized translators who are proficient in both the language being spoken and the target language, so that the translation can ensure viewers’ understanding of the subtitled content.

How is subtitling done?

Subtitling is performed by a translator specialized in audiovisual translation and involves three steps: translation, marking, and proofreading.

Translation involves conveying the video content into another language, usually respecting the character limits required by the client regarding the length of the subtitles.

Marking is the synchronization of the subtitles with the audio track, usually by using timecodes; this is fundamental to ensure that the sound and the text are properly timed.

Lastly, the proofreading stage corrects any possible errors in grammar, translation, and/or marking in the subtitles, and makes the necessary adjustments.
