A “Standard Page” is the unit of measure used when pricing written translation work. At BTS, we follow the criteria defined by the São Paulo State Board of Trade (JUCESP), i.e. 1,000 characters of text, with no spaces.
From the moment a client sends the text to be translated, it will receive an estimate of the number of “standard pages” referring to the specific translation project.
If the document is in electronic format, it’s really simple: In Microsoft Word®, just use the TOOLS menu and then the WORD COUNT command.
The result is indicated in the document’s Statistics, considering the number shown in CHARACTERS (NO SPACES). Divide this result by 1,000 (the number of characters on one standard page).
Voilà! You will have the approximate number of Standard Pages in your project (the exact number depends on the language pair, as the text may increase or decrease when translated). Fill out the price quote request form.

To ensure speed and convenience, your company can send us the text by email or postal service/courier. If necessary, we also offer pick-up service. When it’s time to deliver the completed translation to the client, it will be sent on CD (usually in an MS Word® document) along with a hard copy, or simply by email, fax or postal service/courier.
Simultaneous translation is normally used at lectures, conventions, seminars, etc., where a speaker addresses an audience and a pair of interpreters – isolated in a translation booth – translates the message simultaneously into another language. The audience uses earphones to hear the interpreters. On the other hand, in consecutive translation, the speaker talks for a few moments, then pauses so the interpreter can translate what he/she has said. Consecutive translation doesn’t require any translation equipment, and is best suited for short meetings with a small number of attendees.
Consecutive translation is usually rather tiring and takes quite a bit longer than simultaneous translation. Also, the speaker may lose his/her train of thought, as he/she needs to stop constantly to allow time for the interpreter to translate the message. For these reasons, simultaneous translation is usually the most suitable type of translation for long events or those attended by large audiences.
The translation price quote takes into account two basic variables: the type of translation and the volume to be translated. If the text is technical, involving the jargon of a particular field, the price per STANDARD PAGE will be higher than for a non-technical text, as technical translation involves greater research and development of glossaries. On the other hand, we offer progressive volume discounts. Accordingly, for large volumes of text, we can negotiate lower rates.
It is also worth mentioning that, unlike our competitors, we do not usually apply surcharges for rush service. So we can execute your translation project in a much shorter time at no additional cost to your company.
