Brazilian Sign Language, or “Libras” [Língua Brasileira de Sinais] is a gestural-visual language whereby it’s possible to communicate through signs as well as facial and body expressions. It has been recognized as a legal means of communication and expression since April 24, 2002 (Law 10436); it is widely used in communication with hearing-impaired people and represents an important tool for social inclusion.
When interpreting through Libras, a professional performs the simultaneous or consecutive translation of what is being said. By the same token, this translator can also interpret what a deaf or hearing-impaired person is saying through sign language into the Portuguese language.
Interpretation in Libras can be either consecutiva or simultaneous. In consecutive interpreting, there is a pause between the speaker’s utterances and the interpreter’s interpretation, alternating between the what the speaker says and what the interpreter says.
In simultaneous interpretation, on the other hand, the speaker and the interpreter speak nearly concomitantly, with a difference of no less than three seconds between what the speaker says and what the interpretation says. This means that when the speaker begins speaking, it’s not recommended that the interpretation begin immediately, but rather there should be a delay of three to eight seconds.
A Libras translator is a professional who translates written text into sign language for the hearing impaired, while a Libras interpreter is a professional who translates spoken content from one language to another.
